Ways to Overcome Imposter Syndrome | Embrace Your Authenticity

Do you ever feel like a fraud, even when you’ve achieved some remarkable things in your life or career? Do you worry that you’ll be “found out” and exposed as someone who doesn’t belong? If these thoughts sound familiar, you’re not alone. You might be dealing with a common phenomenon known as imposter syndrome.

Impostor syndrome was first introduced as a concept in a research paper by psychologists Dr. Pauline R. Clance and Dr. Suzanne A. Imes. In 1978, so it’s a fairly new discovery. They published a paper titled “The Impostor Phenomenon in High Achieving Women: Dynamics and Therapeutic Intervention,” which examined this psychological phenomenon, primarily in high-achieving women. It’s also very common in people who run their own businesses, men too, one reason being that often when you run your own business you receive very little validation, especially at the beginning and things are just starting out.

Imposter syndrome can be a real confidence killer, making you question your abilities and downplaying your achievements. But guess what? You’re not an imposter, and you’re definitely not alone in feeling this way. So, let’s explore some friendly and practical ways to kick imposter syndrome to the curb and embrace your authentic self!

Ways to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

1. Recognise That You’re Not Alone

One of the first steps to overcoming imposter syndrome is acknowledging that it’s more common than you might think. Many successful people, from actors to scientists, have experienced it. Remember, feeling like an imposter doesn’t make you one; it makes you human.

2. Talk About It

Don’t keep these feelings to yourself. Share your imposter fears with friends, family, or a mentor. Often, just talking about what you’re going through can provide a sense of relief. Chances are, they’ve been there too. When I began counseling, this was something that came up in my business journey. I often felt like I was failing, because I thought things weren’t moving fast enough. If only I’d realised how long it takes to build and establish a business, I’d have had more grace for myself, instead of so much pressure.

3. Keep a Positivity Journal

Start a journal to record your accomplishments and positive feedback. When imposter thoughts creep in, flip through your journal for a quick confidence boost. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they seem.

As part of journalling, I’ve also found it very helpful to record all successes and keep a very tight record of sales and exactly where they are coming from. This has really helped to pinpoint exactly where to put most effort and what to let go. I suppose it’s a form of validation.

4. Reframe Your Thoughts

Challenge those negative thoughts! Instead of thinking, “I’m a fraud,” try, “I may not know everything, but I’m learning and growing.” Positive self-talk can be a powerful antidote to imposter syndrome. Daily ‘Mantras’ might sound a bit woo woo to you, or you might love them, but celebrating your journey is so important.

5. Set Realistic Goals

Break down your goals into achievable, smaller tasks. Completing these steps will not only boost your confidence but also remind you of your competence.

6. Embrace Failure

Accept that making mistakes is part of learning and growing. Every failure is a stepping stone to success. As the saying goes, “You either win, or you learn.”

7. Seek Constructive Feedback

Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from trusted colleagues, mentors, or friends. Constructive criticism can help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement.

8. Own Your Achievements

When someone compliments you or acknowledges your accomplishments, accept it graciously. Don’t downplay your achievements. Say “Thank you” and own your success.

9. Develop a Growth Mindset

Cultivate a growth mindset, which is the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work and dedication. This mindset shift can help combat feelings of inadequacy.

10. Practice Self-Compassion

Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. Remember that everyone makes mistakes and faces challenges; it’s all part of the journey.

11. Visualize Success

Visualizing your success can boost your confidence and help you feel more prepared. Imagine yourself accomplishing your goals and feeling confident in your abilities.

12. Set Boundaries

It’s crucial to set boundaries and avoid overloading yourself with work or commitments. Learning to say “no” when you need to can help prevent burnout and reduce imposter feelings.

13. Seek a Mentor

Having a mentor can provide invaluable guidance and support. They’ve likely faced imposter syndrome themselves and can share their experiences and strategies for overcoming it.

14. Celebrate Your Progress

Take the time to celebrate your progress and achievements. Whether it’s a small win or a significant milestone, acknowledge your hard work and growth.

15. Remember That Success Is a Journey

Success is not a destination; it’s a journey. Nobody has all the answers, and everyone faces challenges along the way. Keep learning, growing, and embracing the adventure.

In the quest to overcome imposter syndrome, remember that it’s a process, and it’s okay to have setbacks. What matters most is that you continue to push forward, believing in your abilities, and embracing your authentic self. You’ve got this, and you’re not alone in the journey to self-discovery and self-confidence. Keep shining, you incredible human being! 😊✨
